Sustainability

Douglas Shire was proudly awarded Australia’s first Ecotourism Australia ECO Destination Certification. As a certified business within this region, we are honored to be part of a community that prioritizes environmental preservation. Our journey towards eco-certification focused on ensuring the park operates with sustainability at its core, adhering to best practices in three key areas: waste management, water conservation, and energy efficiency. Our park is off-grid, meaning we generate our own power, water, and other essential services. While this adds to our operational costs, it allows us to maintain a unique, sustainable experience in the heart of nature. We achieve this through the use of renewable energy sources, a comprehensive recycling program, and on-site wastewater treatment and the introduction of our Green Camp – a simple, eco-friendly camping experience that focuses on sustainability and a closer connection with nature. Additionally, our park has  4×4 electric vehicles to assist with maintenance, further reducing our carbon footprint.

Conservation efforts are a priority here, with a strong community commitment from both residents and guests to reduce, reuse, and recycle. The local community is deeply knowledgeable about the unique environment they live in and work tirelessly to protect it.

When visiting, we kindly ask you to join us in preserving this pristine environment by recycling, respecting wildlife, and avoiding any disruption to the natural habitats around you. Together, we can contribute to maintaining the beauty and integrity of this remarkable region. Please respect and remember you are camping in the home of two UNESCO World Heritage sites—the iconic Great Barrier Reef and the ancient Daintree National Park
