Things to Do

raglan-surfing

Raglan Surfing

A Mecca for surfers worldwide – Raglan with its three separate point breaks at Indicators, Manu and Whale Bays regularly produce world-class waves when conditions are right.

For the more sedate surfer, Raglan also boasts some great beach breaks too. Only 7km from the Raglan Holiday Park is Manu Bay – a popular surf spot that hosts many national and international surf events each year. At Manu Bay you can pretty much grab your board out of your car and leap off the rocks right into the action.

For a safe surfing beach for learners, Ngarunui Beach is the best place to begin. No matter what your surfing level, there is a beach for you here in the world of Raglan surfing.

Boating in Raglan

Perfect for a family day out in your boat, the Raglan Harbour is a great place to explore during your stay at Raglan Holiday Park.

Tow the kids around on a donut, find a quiet spot to throw a line in to try a bit of Raglan fishing or simply go for a cruise and explore the miles of waterways that make up the Whaingaroa Harbour.

The main Raglan boat ramp is very conveniently located on the east side of our Raglan camping ground.

bridal-veil-falls

Bridal Veil Falls

Just 15 minutes drive from Raglan; Bridal Veil Falls are 55 metres high and regarded as one of the most spectacular falls in the North Island. This is a great half day trip and a good way to stretch your legs too.

Heading back towards Hamilton, Bridal Veil Falls are 15 kms off the main road and are well signposted. From the carpark an easy flat walk through native bush takes you to the top of the falls where you can see the fantastic views.

A further 10 minutes walk down the steep but stepped path takes you to the bottom of the falls for an equally dramatic view.

fishing

Fishing

Raglan fishing gives you all of the options – head out for a day’s fishing, drop a line off your dingy, surf cast off the beach or harbour mouth at Rangipu, or pop across the walk bridge and fish off the jetty at the Raglan township. And all of this is at your doorstep when you stay at our Raglan Holiday Park.

You’ll be almost completely surrounded by water at our Raglan campground – the hardest part of your day will be deciding where to start!
No boat? Never fear – Raglan Fishing Charters can get you over the bar 🙂

Need assistance? Our friendly staff is more than happy to provide you with information on Raglan activities.

Kayaking

With kayaks locally available to hire, including both single and tandem options, there is no reason not to give it a go!

Local operators organise a range of tours for individuals and groups.

Raglan Day Walks

There are a number of great walks around the Raglan region which are close to Raglan Holiday Park.

Estuary Walk
Starting from the Raglan town centre side of the Wainui Road bridge this easy walking track follows the estuary to Robertson road. Ask at the office for a Raglan District map and directions.

Mount Karioi
Allow 5-6 hours return
Mount Karioi is the large mountain on the south side of Raglan. A challenging walk to its 756m high summit is rewarded by the amazing views making it well worth the effort; on a clear day you can see as far as Mt Taranaki.

Follow the Whaanga Road around to the Te Toto Gorge. From here, either do a summit return walk or arrange for someone to pick you up after your climb up one side and down the other. Remember to wear suitable footwear, carry extra clothing (for weather changes) and take plenty of water.

Beach Walk
Simply walk out our beach access gates and over the dunes to the beach. Wander to your heart’s content on the miles and miles of black sandy Raglan beach.  Don’t forget to head out at dusk to watch a beautiful sunset.

Surf Lessons and Board Hire

Always dreamed of being a surfer dude? You can hardly come to Raglan without getting among the waves on a surf board. And it is all possible with everything you need so close to our Raglan accommodation.

Now is your chance during your Raglan camping holiday with a variety of surf schools in the area (website links below). They will provide a board, wetsuit and the best class room experience you’re ever likely to have. To make it even easier still, some will pick you up from your front door too! Ask out staff to help you out, we can book it all for you!

Alternatively, head down to the beach at Ngarunui (from the Wainui Reserve) on a nice day and you’ll probably find one of raglan’s surfing school’s in the carpark or on the beach with boards to hire. So give one of them a holler and learn to do something you’ve always wanted too.

Safe Swimming in Raglan

With the beach just over the sand dunes directly behind camp sites, safe swimming is literally on your doorstep at our Raglan Holiday Park. Enjoy a good old-fashioned game of cricket or baseball on the beach for all the family or lounge about while the kids expend the energy.

Pretty much exclusive to Raglan Holiday Park, ‘our’ beach is a great place to swim, launch your canoe, dingy or stand up paddle board or windsurfer. Kite surfing from here is also popular and will take you straight out into the waves of the harbour mouth.

Raglan’s main swimming beach is just a short drive from our Raglan camping ground, Ngarunui Beach is home to the Raglan Surf Life Saving Club. A beautiful west coast beach, it is renowned for being a great beach to learn to surf and to boogie board. Check out the majestic stone carvings that greet you at the top lookout when you first arrive at Ngarunui Beach.

(Note that the wild sandy beach at Rangipu, located at the far north end of Ngarunui Beach, is NOT safe for swimming due to the strong tidal currents.)

Dining Out in Raglan

Raglan has some great cafes and restaurants – from a morning or afternoon coffee, to a long brunch, or a romantic evening meal as the sun goes down.

And the best part … take the short walk home to your Raglan accommodation via the footbridge through the trees in the park.

raglan-0101

Raglan Community Playground

A huge playground with loads of activities will keep the kids busy for hours. Located on the beach near our Raglan accommodation below the walk bridge, this is also a popular swimming spot in summer.

Why not take the kids down for a late afternoon adventure to burn off some energy, and then finish off the day with fish and chips on the beach from the store. That is life Raglan camping style.

raglan-skate-park

Raglan Skate Park & Papahua Pump Track

Raglan’s skate park is rad! Right beside the beach on the town side of the Raglan Holiday Park – you won’t miss it. Relive those Californian glory days of the 70’s with the cool Dogtown* style skate bowl.

* Dogtown’s Z Boys were the original Californian skaters to jump peoples fences and skate in their empty concrete swimming pools back in the 1970’s.

In 2017 a Pump Track was built by WDC and opened in Raglan Domain – Papahua . This track replaced a BMX track created and built by Raglan locals in 2012.

The Pump track is at the northern section of the domain at the end of Marine Parade and west of the Skateboard Bowl.
